Irrigation at Chipembi
Fortunately, not all of the fields at Chipembi Farm College are dependent upon rain.  Several fields are under irrigation, and these have not been impacted to the same extent.  Most of the irrigated fields are serviced by borehole wells.  An example of an irrigated field can be seen at right.
 
In addition, CFC has one experimental field that has its own borehole well and holding tank that is powered by solar cells.  The solar cells power the pump, which slowly fills the above-ground storage tank.  When needed, water flows via gravity from the holding tank to the field below.  One benefit of solar power is that when electricity is cut to the farm college (as usually happens every day) this particular pump keeps working.
